How to paint metal?
Prepare the metal surface for painting
As with most painting projects, preparation is important. It will make all the difference. Therefore:
- Apply masking tape to all areas that encounter a surface that you do not want to paint and protect the floor;
- Sandpaper to smooth the surface. This will create a slightly rough surface that the paint will adhere to;
- If the surface has thick paint or marks from a previous painting, you may need to use a paint stripper to achieve a smooth finish;
- After sanding, it thoroughly cleans the surface;
- Cleaning the surface helps to remove any dirt and dust. Any dirt stuck in a new layer of paint will be very noticeable.
- Use our Decision Matrix and understand which primer and finishing paint you need (or some Direct-to-Surface or 2-in-1);
- Application of the painting scheme;
- Make sure you’ve stirred the paint properly before you start painting.
- Using a brush, apply a layer of the primer, recommended in the Matrix;
- Let it dry and then apply two/three coats of the finishing paint
Tip: In case you use a Direct-to-Surface or 2-in-1, you will not need primer, however you will need to apply 2/3 coat.
